Skorne Update
Christmas is over, and life is finally getting back to normal as I head back to work and the kids are back in school, which means I’m getting back to my much neglected blog. The good news is that there has been plenty going on to talk about. Hopefully, over the next few weeks, I can all caught up again and fill you in on some of the fun I’ve had over the break.
I’m making good progress on my Skorne army, although I missed out on the first slow grow tournament because I didn’t make the fully painted requirement. It wasn't a lack of painting, but a lack of planning that did me in: While I didn’t get my 15-point list painted, I did finish both units of Cataphract Cerati that I will be using in my 35 and 50 pt. lists. I also finished off a Titan Gladiator, a Cyclops Savage and a unit of Paingiver Beast Handlers - so I’m making some progress. Next I’m going to tackle the Nihilators, just to get the last of the units out of the way.
Our Slow-Grow league is now at the 25-point level, and I continue to build out my army. I could probably come up with some better combos, but I’m trying to use what I’ve got – especially from the battle box. Right now I'm running Morghoul, a Gladiator, two Cyclops Savages, a minimum unit of Paingiver Beast Handlers, a max unit of Nihilators and Hakaar the Destroyer.I've managed to get a few games in, and I’m starting to wrap my brain around Hordes and the fury mechanic. I’m using Morghoul as my low-point caster, just to take advantage of his generous beast points. I’m enjoying the speed and power he can grant his beasts – coupled with beast handlers, he can turn a move his beasts surprisingly fast while jacking their POW up to frightening levels. More importantly, it’s a blast to pirouette through and entire formation of Temple Flame Guard, gutting them down to a man in a single turn!
I’m struggling a little more getting mileage out of the Nihilators, as they can’t seem to get a good match up. In my first game they fought TFG, and couldn’t beat their high armor (forcing Morghoul to clean up), and in the second game they faced Kayazy, and they couldn’t hit the high defense. I’m starting to sense they are more tar-pit than offensive powerhouse. At least by pairing them with Hakaar I get some souls when they die, and thanks to Tough they tend to die a little at a time, feeding a constant supply of souls. Even so, I’m wondering If I wouldn’t be better off with something else.
Easing my way back into playing again after taking some time off has been fun, and a new faction is definitely reinvigorating. I’m enjoying the Skorne story and learning the background of the faction, and the guys at the FLGS have been really good to put up with my sloppy play while I figure the Hordes thing out. It’s good to be back.

Nihilators are really good - you kinda have to let them grow on you though. There's not a whole lot else in the Skorne arsenal deadlier than those guys. Swordsmen lack the oomph except on minifeat and Immortals have a lower MAT. I still like and field the Immortals but the Nihilators are really good.
